South West Youth Study

Miles Morgan is conducting an environmental scan of the youth labour market in the South West region of Western Australia.

The study seeks to examine the current and future skill requirements of local industry, the career aspirations and training needs of young people aged 15-24 in the region, and examine the linkages between education, training, and industry.

Given that there are some reported shortfalls between industry demand and available workers in some industries in the South West, the study will look at skills shortages ares, the reasons for skills shortages, young people's employment and training preferences, and young people's career development needs and aspirations.

The study will also look at the transition support services offered by education, training, employment, and youth service providers in the region.

Workshops: During October 2008, Miles Morgan will be conducting 5 focus groups in the South West. These groups are open to any interested South West resident who wishes to participate. We are particularly interested in the views of parents of young people, employers of young people, people working with young people, those involved in the schools system, and of course, young people themselves! This is your chance to share your views on the challenges and opportunities surrounding young people seeking to build careers and find employment in the South West.

Workshops will be conducted in:

  • Manjimup
  • Collie
  • Bunbury
  • Margaret River
  • Busselton

We will be holding workshops between the 20th and the 30th of October. If you are interested in participating, please contact either Marnie Kennedy (marnie@milesmorgan.com.au) or Ben Haines (ben@milesmorgan.com.au), or you can call Marnie or Ben on 08 93806633.

Youth Survey: We are also offering a survey, solely for young people aged 15-24. The survey is about employment and career aspirations for young people in the South West, and is open to anyone aged 15-24 who has lived in the region at some time during the past 3 years. Please follow this link if you would like to participate. All participants will be entered into a draw to win an iPod of your choice.

Youth Interviews: We are also conducting one-to-one teleconsultations with young people (15-24) living in the South West. If you'd like to share your views on what its like trying to find and build a career in the South West, about education and training in the area, and about the difficulties and opportunities facing young people in the region, please contact either Ben (ben@milesmorgan.com.au), or Marnie (marnie@milesmorgan.com.au), or call us on 08 9380 6633 and we'll organise a brief phone interview. All participants will be entered into a draw to win an iPod of your choice.
